This whakataukī stems from a story of a famous Māori rangatira (chief), Nukutawhiti, who cast his kura (feathered cloak) into the Hokianga Harbour to calm the waters for safe passage. To this day it remains there hidden from sight, yet signifies the ancient presence of those that have gone before. Just like the whakataukī, the Koru design at the heart of this drawing can hold many meanings and interpretations. Based on the unfurling shoot of a fern, the Koru represents new life, growth, strength and harmony. Its circular shape conveys eternal movement, and it’s inner coil, suggests a return to the point of origin that connects us to our lineage and experiences.
